February is shaping up to be a really great month for gamers. Some very big, highly-anticipated video games are on the horizon, and the only concern I have is how we’re supposed to have time to play all these games.
Between all the massive RPGs, the first-person shooters and the strategy games landing in February, I’m pretty sure my gaming backlog will simply grow—and my free time will be spent trying to juggle these with some of January’s releases that I’m still playing, like God Of War on PC>
Here are my top games for February, with the big list of video game releases coming out next month below that.
The Waylanders (Feb 2nd)
The Waylanders is a PC RPG from Gato Studio that’s being billed as a Dragon Age: Origins-inspired adventure game, replete with romance systems, pause-play combat and a bunch of different classes and characters, but with a Celtic fantasy twist.
You can check out the game’s Steam page where it’s getting “Mixed” reviews from gamers who have been playing the Early Access version. Of course, you need to remember that Early Access means unfinished, so it’s bound to be a little rough. Anyone thirsty for some classic BioWare RPGs like Dragon Age: Origins or Neverwinter Nights should keep this on their radar.
Sifu (Feb 8th)
Sloclap’s Absolver was a pretty cool fighting game and the developer’s next game, Sifu, looks to build on and improve upon what made Absolver such a unique release. This game looks like a pretty major step forward, also, bringing some really legit looking kung fu combat to the table, along with a cool ‘rougelite’ twist:
Each time the player dies, they’ll be resurrected at the same spot but aged by several years. As you age, your attacks become stronger, but you have less life. Pretty cool! This one isn’t coming to Steam (yet) but you can play on PC via the Epic Game Store.
CrossfireX (Feb 10th)
I haven’t played the Crossfire games before but I have to say this looks pretty damn good. The Xbox One / Xbox Series X exclusive actually looks like a significant departure from the online free-to-play multiplayer game (which looks more like Counter-Strike to me). It’s only coming to Xbox at this point with no PlayStation or PC release, which is kind of rare these days.
Lost Ark (Feb 11th)
The wildly popular Korean MMORPG is headed to Steam next month and it looks really good—if you’re into MMOs. I’m not really, but I love to dive in and try new ones out nonetheless. I had some fun with Amazon’s New World and now it’s on to Lost Ark.
Rumbleverse (Feb 15th)
Epic Games is publishing this one, adding a Fortnite competitor to its own stable of games. Rumbleverse looks like a fun melee-based (and very cartoony/kiddie) battle royale and I’m looking forward to taking it for a spin.
Total Warhammer III (Feb 17th)
If you enjoy the Total War games—massive, epic, real-time battles featuring huge armies—and the dark fantasy universe of Warhammer, you’ll enjoy Total Warhammer. The third entry in the collaboration looks bigger and better than ever
Horizon Forbidden West (Feb 18th)
I thought the original Horizon Zero Dawn was beautiful and boring, and I’m hoping that the sequel is beautiful and exciting instead. Less tedium, more action. Then again, I say this about a lot of games where you constantly have to pick stuff up and craft—it’s just that Horizon Zero Dawn had so much of that stuff it felt overwhelmingly tedious to play.
Still, the sequel looks great and I do love robot dinosaurs in a cool post-apocalyptic world. Should look better than ever on PS5, too.
Destiny 2: The Witch Queen (Feb 22nd)
I haven’t played Destiny 2 in a good long while—our own Paul Tassi plays enough, and writes enough, for the both of us—but I used to play quite a bit and The Witch Queen gives me a good excuse to dive back in.
The first proper expansion to Destiny 2 in a long, long while, The Witch Queen should overhaul a bunch of systems, add new content including a new campaign about the titular queen, Savathûn and her rival Eris Morn.
Elden Ring (Feb 25th)
Be still my beating heart! If there were no other games releasing in February other than FromSoftware’s Elden Ring, I would be perfectly okay with that. Assuming I get a review code from Bandai Namco, I suspect I will spend most of my February gaming hours on this game, and probably many more in March.
Elden Ring, which is a collaboration between Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki and Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin is absolutely amazing. I played many hours of its Network Test beta and came away feeling more excited than ever for the open-world action-RPG. It builds on every previous Souls game (including Bloodborne) and feels very much like the logical next step for the studio. I can’t wait.
Okay, on to the big list.
