ETRI unveils domestic technology for upcoming metaverse world

ETRI, short for Electronics & Telecommunication Research Institute, has unveiled technologies that will match the upcoming hyper-realistic metaverse world. The work done by researchers revolves around imaging and stereoscopic technologies. ETRI has participated in a number of events starting August 16, 2023, to showcase the innovation and its capabilities in helping to achieve some unrealistic goals for the metaverse.

The most recent exhibition saw ETRI bring up a total of four different technologies:

  • Converged displays
  • Hyper-realistic displays
  • 3D stereoscopic shape inspection equipment
  • Stereoscopic image creation and services

However, this is not the end. According to Dr. Lee of ETRI, they will now endeavour to advance core display and metaverse technologies. The purpose of this is to propel the hyper-reality metaverse.

Dr. Lee Jeong-ik from ETRI is the VP of the Hyper-Reality Metaverse Research Laboratory.

Hyper-reality displays see ETRI introduce OLED-on-Silicon micro-display technology, quantum dot color conversion display technology, and M3D technology.

  • OLED-on-Silicon micro-display technology is to help achieve realistic virtual reality in XR, an acronym for extended reality devices.
  • Quantum dot color conversion display technology has been developed to make sure that it delivers high resolution.
  • Finally, M3D technology will help XR devices be lightweight, especially those that consume less power and are thin.

Converged display talks about stretchable circuit technology and electrochromic display technology.

  • Stretchable circuit technology is for space and objects, with a special emphasis on customization as per the needs of every user. It helps to realize freeform displays for space and objects.
  • Electrochromic display technology can be applied inside self-driving cars as an infotainment. It also displays controls for the users.

In addition, it has been speculated that the military can employ ETRI’s new intelligent stealth display technology to avoid detection both during the day and at night. Instead, it will use infrared or visible light to show visuals that blend in with their environment.

The 3D stereoscopic shape inspection equipment brings technology to help achieve 3D shape information for semiconductor chips and display panel devices. Hologram technology will be used to its full extent, allowing for more accurate inspection of flaws. A further introductory piece discusses the development of the 3D plenoptic microscope.

It can help to inspect the 3D shape of a device in real-time. Interestingly, the lens appears to be an insect to general eyes, even though it is a lens that is consuming information.

ETRI is simultaneously contributing to the competitiveness of corporate technology and assisting in the construction of an industrial ecosystem. ETRI has a track record of operating Display Panel Technologies National Laboratory since 2020. The venture is working to provide components, materials, and verification of equipment to 22 companies. Prototype manufacturing services and hands-on instruction for human resources are also provided.

ETRI was founded in 1976 and now operates as a non-profit, government-funded institute for research. The institute aims to make strides in developing the Korean region to make it one of the top ICT countries worldwide.
