In an interview on Token Game Show 2024, Japanese developers expressed their frustration over UN-driven agendas. According to them they are being forced to comply with certain pressures has threatened their creative freedom.
Japanese game developers face compliance issues
One of their issues was the limitation of showing too much skin of the game characters. Too much skin causes age restrictions which limits their audience and sales.
Secondly, the former editor-in-chief of Weekly Shonen Jump, Kazuhiko Torishima shares how manga needs to be rated 13 to be sold in America. Furthermore, he refers to this approach as narrow-minded, and doing business with such countries is frustrating.
Moreover, the changes in character customization in games, such as Dragon Quest and Baldur Gate 3, have ignited these concerns as well.
Some games have also been restricted to specify gender identity
In Dragon Quest, the character’s options have been obscurely labeled as “Type 1” and “Type 2” which was initially a choice between “male” or “female” characters. Similarly, there is no mention of gender in Baldur Gate 2, only the body type 1 or 2.
Under the name of compliance…it’s like an absolute God…an evil disguised as good. There’s no such thing as content that doesn’t make everyone uncomfortable. Because beauty and ugliness, good and evil, are different for everyone – says Kazuhiko Torishima
According to the developers, such limitations and compliances have been the hurdles to their creative freedom.
