Edward Snowden Says The New Policy a “Crime”
The recent MetaMask policy update by Consensys has struck like a lightning to people. According to the new privacy policy, the company will utilize users’ financial information, profile information, identity information and so on. The event has created speculations about the cryptosphere being anonymous and private.
Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower, being a privacy advocate expressed his disappointment on the new policy. He took to Twitter saying that “In a just society, this would be a crime”. He previously leaked highly confidential documents from the NSA which revealed a large surveillance network around the globe.
He had previously worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), an organization notorious for its controversies including training assassins, manipulating governments and more. The biggest controversy associated with the organization remains the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 35th President of United States. Edward Snowden was granted Russian citizenship by Vladimir Putin in November 2022.
Later, Edward Snowden removed the Tweet citing some misunderstanding in the post. But he kept his stand on the fact that the matter at hand concerns privacy. He said that the organization is working on a response to his question.
How Can It Affect The Users?
People already speculate about the cryptosphere being too vulnerable to malicious actors. The space has witnessed several cyber attacks in the past including the Polynetwork hack where the attackers bagged $600 Million from the ecosystem. In March 2021, North Korea-based Lazarus group stole $614 Million in cryptocurrencies.
Another important hack remains the Mt. Gox exchange attack which forced the organization to file for bankruptcy. According to the report, hackers stole 650K – 850K Bitcoins out of which only 200K were recovered. The exchange was accountable for over 70% BTC transactions during its peak time.
Recently, Privacy Affairs, a privacy focused information provider, issued a report titled “Dark Web Price Index 2022”. It reveals what happens to the stolen data after the hack. Interestingly, the report shows that the hacked crypto accounts are sold for as low as $90 to $400. This includes hacked Coinbase verified accounts, Kraken accounts, Crypto(dot)com accounts and more.
Apart from this, the report shows that stolen streaming services accounts, social media accounts, card data and more are sold on the Dark Web. Many stories circling around the dark web include contract killing, smuggling, and other malicious activities. The most famous place on the dark web remains the Red Rooms, where people are tortured and murdered for an online audience.
