Edgar Berlanga Vs. Hamzah Sheeraz: Odds, Records, Prediction

Not many observers believed that Edgar Berlanga had much of a chance against Canelo Alvarez when they tangled last September. But Berlanga made it a good fight and lost by a respectable decision. As a result, Berlanga has plenty of confidence heading into Saturday night’s showdown vs. the undefeated Hamzah Sheeraz. Here’s everything you need to know about Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz, including the odds, their records and a prediction on who will win.

Though he was a 10/1 underdog, Berlanga gained a measure of respect from the boxing public after his performance vs. Alvarez. Sure, he was knocked down by Alvarez in the third round, but he finished the fight on steady legs. Now, he’ll look to take whatever momentum he won by lasting the distance vs. Alvarez and use it vs. Sheeraz, who’s coming off a draw vs. middleweight world titlist Carlos Adames.

“I’ve always been like this [confident],” Berlanga said. “You saw me in the Canelo fight. I went toe-to-toe with him. I was trash-talking him to his face. I’m like that at the highest level.”

And it doesn’t seem like he has much respect for Sheeraz.

“He’s a basic fighter,” Berlanga said. “I’ve been boxing since I was 6 years old. What he brings, I’ve already seen.”

Though Sheeraz, who was riding a 15-fight stoppage streak before facing Adames in February, wasn’t as destructive as he would have liked while fighting for the 160-pound belt, he said he feels ready for Saturday. He’s coming up eight pounds to face Berlanga in a super middleweight bout, and he knows he has plenty more to prove.

“I’m coming, and I’m coming for everything,” Sheeraz said. “I feel like this fight, for the first time in my career, I’m being underestimated. I get it; you’re only as good as your last performance in boxing. I’m telling you now, on July 12, when I get the win, the Hamzah Sheeraz hype train will be back on again. We’re coming with everything.”

Here’s more info on the Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz showdown that U.S. viewers can watch on DAZN PPV for $59.99 beginning at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz odds

Further strengthening the idea that this is pretty close to a 50-50 fight, Sheeraz is the small betting favorite at -155 (bet $155 to win $100), while Berlanga is the +125 underdog (win $125 on a $100 bet). I think Berlanga’s money line has more value than Sheeraz’s, and I also wouldn’t mind a bet on this fight not going the distance at +100 (the fight lasting all 12 rounds is -138).

If you were looking for a fun parlay for this weekend’s action of boxing (and this is only for entertainment purposes), I might take Berlanga to beat Sheeraz at +125, Shakur Stevenson to beat William Zepeda by decision at -200 and Alberto Puello to beat Subriel Matias by decision at +140. If all of those hit, you’d make $710 on a $100 wager.

Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz records

After his loss to Alvarez, Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) jumped back into the ring four months later and beat the undefeated Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz by first-round knockout. His best victory is still probably his knockout win vs. the undefeated Padraig McCrory, but he also has solid victories vs. Jason Quigley and Steve Rolls.

Sheeraz (21-0-1, 17 KOs) is the third undefeated opponent in Berlanga’s last four fights, but Sheeraz is clearly the one with the most upside. He’s coming off a split draw vs. Carlos Adames in a middleweight world title fight, but he also has some nice victories vs. Austin Williams and Liam Williams.

Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz prediction

This feels like a 50-50 fight. Both fighters have power, and perhaps both can hurt the other. Berlanga has faced the best of the best, while Sheeraz has taken on fighters who are a level below that. Will Berlanga’s high-level experience give him the edge? I think so. I’ll go with Berlanga to win by close decision, somewhere in the 115-113 range.
