Dustin Johnson met Wayne Gretzky a decade ago at a charity golf event and the two have been frequent playing partners on the course over the years, both in casual rounds and as teammates in pro-am tournaments. Their bond grew deeper when Johnson started dating (and later became engaged to) Gretzky’s daughter, Paulina.
Johnson, a two-time major champion who spent 135 weeks as the world’s No. 1 ranked golfer, over the years has praised the friendship, support and encouragement he’s received from the hockey Hall of Famer known as “The Great One.” Now, adidas has brought the two greats together in the brand’s latest creative limited-edition release, with Johnson wearing the specially-designed Tour360 22 golf shoes this week at the PGA TOUR’s Genesis Invitational. The shoes will be available in limited quantities beginning Feb. 25 on the adidas website.
“Once Dustin and Wayne started playing together pretty frequently in pro-ams we always had it in our heads to create something unique that celebrated both of them,” said Masun Denison, global footwear director, adidas Golf. “The Tour360 22 provides the perfect canvas for something like this and knowing how much hockey players love to play golf, we know this will be exciting for fans of both sports.”
Johnson has been with adidas since the week he turned professional in 2007. His “DJ” logo appears on the left shoe and inside sock liner, while Gretzky’s iconic number “99” — the only number retired by every single NHL team — is on the right shoe. The colorway of the shoes are inspired by colors of the Edmonton Oilers, the team with which Gretzky won four Stanley Cup titles and eight of his record nine NHL Most Valuable Player awards.
“I’ve been part of some amazing collaborations with the adidas team over the years, but this one definitely goes to the top of the list,” said Johnson. “Wayne is the greatest to ever play hockey and I know how much he loves golf, so to be there with him side by side on this limited edition TOUR360 22 is really cool.”
The TOUR360 is adidas’ flagship model, first introduced to the golf world in 2005. The latest model, the 22, was released last month.
