Dua Lipa Breaks Her Historic Tie With Adele On The Hot 100

On this week’s Hot 100, Dua Lipa fills two spaces, with a pair of smashes sitting nearly right next to one another. The pop singer’s collaboration with Elton John, “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix)” declines slightly to No. 14 while her previous release “Levitating” is a non-mover at No. 17. It’s amazing that the lower-ranking of the tunes sits as high as it does, considering how long it’s been going on the weekly ranking of the most-consumed tracks in the U.S., and with one more frame to its credit, the cut makes history.

“Levitating” has now lived on the Hot 100 for 66 weeks. That’s an incredible sum for any single, but when looking only at those tracks released by women, it is a historically long stretch of time. In fact, the poppy smash is now the third-longest-running Hot 100 hit by a female musician. It held that record last time around, but it had to share the spotlight. Now, Lipa is alone in this accomplishment.

Last week, Lipa was tied with both Adele and Jewel, as all three women claimed a hit that stood as one of the third-longest-charting in Hot 200 history among female stars. In addition to “Levitating,” both Jewel’s double single “Foolish Games” / “You Were Meant for Me” and Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” held on for 65 turns before disappearing from the ranking entirely. Now, those cuts are tied as the fourth-longest-charting tracks by women, while Lipa’s biggest smash continues.

The longest-charting single by a female artist in Hot 100 history is LeAnn Rimes’ “How Do I Live,” which managed an incredible 69 weeks somewhere on the list in the late ‘90s. Just one frame behind that generation-defining hit is “Party Rock Anthem,” which was fronted by LMFAO and which also credited both Lauren Bennett and GoonRock. Bennett’s sole appearance on the list on her own stands as the second-longest-running win on the Hot 100 among compositions by women.

Seeing as it’s still present inside the top 20, it seems like “Levitating” will continue to add to its already historic sum of weeks. In fact, it stands a good chance of matching the 68-frame run enjoyed by “Party Rock Anthem,” and it could easily match, and even pass, “How Do I Live.” The only thing that may hurt Lipa’s chances at more glory is what’s called the recurrent rule, which states that any tune that’s spent 52 weeks (a full year) or more on the Hot 100 is automatically removed from the ranking should it dip below No. 25.
