Ajay Devgn-Tabu-starrer Drishyam 2 released on November 18, and has crossed $12 million worldwide in three days. The film saw a good opening on Friday with $701,000 in India alone. Drishyam 2 has earned $1,025,000 in the US markets alone in three days, as per Comscore
In the Indian market, Drishyam 2 earned $1.88 million on Friday and the collections rose on Saturday, to $2.4 million. On Sunday, it collected $3.3 million, making a weekend total of $7.7 million. The film was made on an estimated budget of $6.1 million.
Drishyam 2 is now the second biggest opener in India after Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra Part One Shiva. The Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt-starrer made an opening of $4.4 million when it released on September 9. The new film has toppled Kartik Aaryan’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 which made an opening collection of $1.81 million.
The film registered good trends even before the release with the advance bookings. Speaking about it, PVR Limited CEO Gautam Dutta says, “We are seeing the trend of families coming back to cinemas and Drishyam 2 pre-sales substantiates this trend. After a subdued Q-2, Q-3 is turning out well (for PVR) with a huge line up of movies covering all genres. Drishyam 2’s success debunks the thought that only larger-than-life or horror comedies will work while the mid-size drama and thrillers will struggle in at the box office.”
Released in more than 4000 screens worldwide, the film is a remake of the Malayalam hit Drishyam 2 which featured Mohanlal in the lead role. The Hindi film is directed by Abhishek Pathak. Jeethu Joseph has written both the original and the Hindi remake.
Drishyam 2 sees the reopening of the case that the first film explored. Devgn and Tabu revive their roles and are back at being the opposite sides. Pathak swiftly keeps the narrative edgy, witty and thrilling. Backed by brilliant performances from Tabu and Devgn, the film is a must watch for all suspense thriller fans.
The film’s box office success sets the perfect trend for Hindi films at the box office. Prior to the pandemic outbreak, films that worked at the ticket windows in India were mostly categorized under ‘mass entertainment’ or ‘masala films’. These were often full of larger-than-life heroes, orthodox but popular notions and belief and romance. After the pandemic outbreak and subsequent widening reach of digital platforms, content driven cinema was being pushed as digital content. Now, with the success of films such as Brahmastra Part One Shiva, Drishyam 2, Uunchai and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, it can now be safely said that good content may also be rewarded at the box office.
