Topline
Doug Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, was suddenly rushed out of a high school in Washington, D.C., by Secret Service agents after the school reported a bomb threat Tuesday.
Key Facts
Emhoff was visiting Dunbar High School – the country’s first public high school opened specifically for Black students – for a Black History Month event when he was ushered out by the Secret Service, according to CBS News.
D.C. Public Schools spokesperson Enrique Gutierrez told NBC News the event ended early because the school received a bomb threat, adding she thinks “everyone is safe” and that “the building is clear.”
Emhoff’s communications director Katie Peters confirmed the security incident on Twitter, writing that the second gentleman “is safe and the school has been evacuated.”
The Secret Service did not immediately return a Forbes request for comment.
What We Don’t Know
It’s still unclear if the threat is related to Emhoff’s visit or Black History Month, according to the Associated Press. Last week, more than a dozen historically black colleges and universities received bomb threats.
Key Background
Emhoff is the first second gentleman in U.S. history, and the first Jewish spouse of a U.S. president or vice president. Emhoff worked as an entertainment lawyer for more than three decades. In his role as second gentleman, Emhoff helps promote the Biden Administration’s priorities by encouraging vaccination, visiting small businesses and supporting Harris during overseas trips, like her trip to Paris last year.
