I’ve nearly lost track of all the Disney Star Wars projects that have been announced, forgotten about or outright cancelled over the years (remember when the Game of Thrones guys were gonna do movies?). But one project has now resurfaced, a Lando Calrissian Disney Plus series starring Donald Glover, reprising his role from Solo, the film that kind of ended up killing the entire Disney Star Wars slate for several years with its poor performance (though if you ask me, the new trilogy movies were worse).
The topic has come up again in a new GQ interview with Glover, who is attached to a zillion other projects, mostly recently Swarm on Amazon, and he seems to indicate there’s still some kind of a spark there.
“I would love to play Lando again. It’s a fun time to be him,” Glover said. “It just needs to be the right way to do it. I’m not interested in doing anything that’s just gonna be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that l enjoy. So it just has to be the right thing, which I think it could be.”
The Lando series has survived the recent tidying up of straggling Disney Star Wars projects, which included scrapped Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins movies. Other upcoming series we know are happening outside of one more planned season of Andor and infinite seasons of The Mandalorian are the Ahsoka series and The Acolyte, which will finally move out of this timeline and way back into the High Republic era, which Disney has been pushing through a new series of novels.
But of course Lando would put us right back in the Skywalker era again, attached to the same characters, having us expect the same kind of cameos. While I love Donald Glover, I do find myself wondering what story there actually is to tell there. I suppose would be interested to see the story with Emilia Clarke’s Qi’ra and the reanimated Darth Maul continue, even if Maul’s resurgence and ultimate (second) death has been explored to death in Dave Filoni’s animated series.
Disney really, really seems to be struggling with Star Wars lately. Their movies were very uneven. Their shows have been very uneven. They have some real highlights, Rogue One, Andor and parts of The Mandalorian, but the lows are low, Rise of Skywalker, Boba Fett, Obi-Wan. It doesn’t feel like there’s much of a coherent plan here other than vaguely continuing a lot of Dave Filoni’s past storylines into live action. I’m not sure what a Lando series adds to any of this, as good as Glover may have originally been in the role.
