Dolly Parton Stays On Rock Hall Of Fame Ballot—Even Though She Wants Off

Topline

The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Foundation said Thursday that Dolly Parton remains in contention as a possible inductee, three days after the legendary singer said she wasn’t “worthy” of the honor and declined her nomination.

Key Facts

The foundation said Parton’s name was “sent out earlier this month” to a body of 1,200 general ballot voters, along with 16 other nominees.

Despite her “thoughtful note,” the foundation said it is “proud to have nominated her.”

Crucial Quote

“From its inception, Rock & Roll has had deep roots in Rhythm & Blues and Country music. It is not defined by any one genre, rather a sound that moves youth culture,” the foundation said. “Dolly Parton’s music impacted a generation of young fans and influenced countless artists that followed.”

Key Background

Nominees for the 2022 class were announced last month and included artists Beck, Eminem, Carly Simon and A Tribe Called Quest and others, alongside Parton. Parton released a statement Monday saying she doesn’t feel she has “earned” the right to be nominated and didn’t want to take votes away from other artists. The 76-year-old legend also said she would like to be considered again in the future and hopes to eventually release a “great rock & roll album.” This was Parton’s first year being nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Big Number

$350 million. That’s Parton’s estimated net worth. She made Forbes’ list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women for the first time in 2021.
