Ever since Dolly Parton respectfully declined her induction into this year’s Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, she’s seems to have kept her word in saying she’s planning to record her very first rock album. All of which is a respectful and sincere move by Parton, and in her own words it’s something she’s “always wanted to do.”
However, it looks like she’s taking it one step further with this upcoming rock album, as she’s recently revealed she’s interested in covering one of rock’s all time greatest hits, Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.”
In a newly published interview with Pollstar, the country star talked about the opportunity of recording a rock album for her husband, who just so happens to be a “total rock n’ roll freak.” In the interview Parton mentions that her husband was actually in disapproval of her covering the iconic tune.
“He did not like it when I was going to do “Stairway to Heaven,” Parton says. “But I’m going to redo that really on the money. I did it kind of bluegrass-style when I did it; but when I do the rock album, I’m going to actually re-record it – and do it more true to the regular record. I’m trying to see if Robert Plant might sing on it. Maybe Jimmy Page might do the pick-up part on it. I’m looking forward to dragging in some of the great classic people, girls and boys, to sing on some of the songs.”
It certainly would be interesting to see Jimmy Page and Robert Plant cross musical paths again, and it would be something special if Dolly Parton was the catalyst for their reunion.
The last time Page and Plant performed together was in 2007 for the Celebration Day concert, which saw the remaining members of Led Zeppelin perform for a sold out arena in London. While the event stood as a monumental reunion for one of rock’s most legendary bands, it was actually a benefit concert in honor of Atlantic Records founder, Ahmet Ertegun.
