Snow White — Disney’s live-action adaptation of its 1937 classic starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot — will try to find a new audience on streaming this week after flopping in theaters.
Snow White’s animated counterpart, of course, is the legendary animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, based on the classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Snow White opened on March 21 after the film endured three-plus years of controversies during production, including Zegler’s pointed observations about the animated version of the tale and her politically divisive social media posts.
The official synopsis of the film reads, Disney’s Snow White, a live-action musical reimagining of the classic 1937 film, Starring Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) in the title role and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) as her stepmother, the Evil Queen, the magical music adventure journeys back to the timeless story with beloved characters Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy and Sneezy.”
Per a listing on Prime Video, Snow White is set to arrive on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, May 13. The film’s digital purchase price is $29.99. Since digital rentals are generally $5 less than purchase prices, viewers can expect to rent Snow White for $24.99 for 48 hours.
Apart from Prime Video, Snow White will be available on PVOD on several digital platforms, including AppleTV, Fandango at Home and YouTube.
Snow White has had a rough run in theaters, earning $86.2 million in North American theaters and $116.3 million in international ticket sales for a worldwide box office tally of $202.5 million to date against a $269.4 million production budget before prints and advertising costs, according to The Numbers.
‘Snow White’ Was Met With Many Rough Reviews From Critics
Apart from Snow White’s box office woes, the film was met with middling reviews upon its theatrical release.
Snow White had a 40% “rotten” rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 255 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Snow White is hardly a grumpy time at the movies thanks to Rachel Zegler’s luminous star turn, but its bashful treatment of the source material along with some dopey stylistic choices won’t make everyone happy, either.”
Snow White did, however, have more of a positive reception by audiences on RT, as the film earned a 72% “fresh” Popcornmeter score based on 2,500-plus verified user ratings.
Rated PG, Snow White, directed by Marc Webb, will arrive on PVOD on Tuesday.
