Despite Musk’s ultimatum, Twitter to continue WFH policy forever

Twitter, which was one of the first to adopt a work-from-home-forever policy in the early days of the epidemic, approximately May 2020, isn’t on the list of companies strengthening their hold on remote labor.

Some Big Tech businesses are already limiting the leeway for telecommuters, more than two years after COVID-19 shut down offices.

However, In a statement to Fast Company, a Twitter spokeswoman said, “We can confirm that Twitter continues to enable permanent work from home as was announced in 2020, with no intentions to modify this policy.”

Twitter stands still on WFH

For Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, who was at the helm when the policy was approved, the most creative place for him might be San Francisco, where he lives on the oceanfront in Sea Cliff; Myanmar, where he went on a meditation trip in 2018; or Africa, where he was scheduled to relocate for six months in 2020 before the pandemic disrupted his plans.

It’s no wonder that Dorsey, who has been labeled as “eccentric,” “bohemian,” and “a traveler,” would approve a nomad-friendly policy for the rest of his organization.

Despite a surge of IT businesses leading a drive back to the office, Twitter seems to be staying strong on WFH even after new CEO Parag Agrawal assumed the lead in November.

“While our offices have reopened across the world, workers can work from home part-time or full-time if they like….” Employees should be able to work wherever they are most productive and creative.”

Google, Facebook/Meta, Microsoft, and Apple have all started calling telecommuters back to the office, with some offering on-campus music concerts, pop-up food shacks, and a terrarium-making class to ease the pain. (Reddit and Amazon are two digital businesses that still enable remote employees.)

Musk asks to return to work or resign

Elon Musk is said to have issued two emails to Tesla staff.

The CEO of the electric car informed employees on Tuesday that they could either return to work or resign.

According to emails acquired by Electrek, Musk wrote, “If you don’t show up, we will presume you have quit.” “This is less than we require of industrial employees,” he said,”That’s why I spent so much time at the factory—so that people on the line could see me working alongside them,”

In light of this, it’s unclear whether Twitter’s WFH flexibility will be terminated if Musk’s purchase of the social media network is completed.

The $44 billion acquisition is presently going through corporate scrutiny, but some analysts fear Musk may try to destroy it—whether it’s because of the early-May stock market drop, which made the economics significantly less logical, or because of the entrepreneur’s own erratic temperament.

Aside from commercial earnings, remote work is one of the most appealing benefits a company can provide to its employees.

According to a Harris Poll conducted in August 2021, 62% of Americans indicated they would take a wage drop to be able to work from home permanently, 30% said they would work longer hours, and 13% said they would tolerate worse working conditions.
