The 39-year-old Wilder has not fought since June 1, 2024, when Zhilei Zhang stopped him via TKO in the fifth round of a matchup at Kingdom Arena, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The loss dropped Wilder to 43-4-1 and put his five-fight record at 1-4.

Wilder was 42-0-1 when he put his WBC heavyweight title on the line in a rematch against Tyson Fury in February 2020. Fury scored a seventh-round KO in that matchup. The two met in a trilogy bout in October 2021. That fight lasted until the 11th round but ended in the same manner, with Fury earning a TKO.

A year later, Wilder scored a first-round knockout win over Robert Helenius in Brooklyn. However, Wilder’s next two outings ended in losses. He fell to Joseph Parker by decision in December 2023 and followed that with the loss to Zhang.

Wilder’s run as WBC champ lasted from 2015 through 2020. He defended his crown 10 times before the loss to Fury. The two had met for the first time in December 2018, with that fight ending in a split draw.

Herndon is coming off a May 3, 2024, six-round split-decision win over Rudy Silvas (7-1-1).

Wilder is ranked No. 12 by the WBC. Herndon is unranked.

Deontay Wilder Vs. Tyrrell Herndon Breakdown

While many will see this matchup as a potential comeback fight for Wilder, he does not look at the Herndon matchup in that way.

“It’s just a return,” Wilder said. “It’s not a comeback.

“It’s a comeback when you retire and then you come back. You feel me? The terminology is always wrong. I say [it] when people use the wrong terminology all the time. They think when someone has left the ring for a significant amount of time and then they return, they feel like it’s a comeback, but it’s never a comeback. It’s always just returning from the ring. You leave the ring and you return to it. And in this business, you need those gaps. A lot of the fighters that started to fight when they was five, six years old, seven, eight, even nine, I understand how burnt out they get at a certain time, and they must leave and then come back.”

In short, Wilder wants to use this fight as a launching point to something bigger and better and looking at his opponent, this fight was put together for Wilder to get a spectacular win. Herndon has a lot of wins on his record, but the quality of his opponents in those contests is not the highest.

On the other side, if you remove Wilder’s win over Robert Helenius, Wilder hasn’t had a win since he knocked out Luis Ortiz in defense of his WBC crown in 2019. Of course, Wilder had his moments against Fury, but he could not get the win. He then struggled against name fighters in Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang.

Wilder needs to not just beat Herndon, but put him away in a highlight-reel fashion if he hopes to use this scrap as a takeoff point to a fight that will lead to a matchup that will interest casual boxing fans.

Deontay Wilder Vs. Tyrrell Herndon Breakdown Prediction And Pick

The pick is that Wilder will look good on Friday and that he will get a knockout without much trouble. That win should convince enough boxing fans that Wilder, at 39, has enough in the tank to draw fans to his next fight, which if at all possible, should come against Anthony Joshua, something that Eddie Hearn recently mentioned.

“There is a potential that AJ could fight Deontay Wilder in October, November, December, and then fight Tyson Fury, and then he’s kind of got the full set in terms of every elite heavyweight of this generation, he’s faced in the ring,” said Hern.

“AJ will return during that period this year and obviously he must win, and that performance will tell us a lot about the future of Anthony Joshua,” added Hearn.
