Ousmane Dembele has renovated his contract with FC Barcelona, as confirmed by the club.
An announcement was made on the Blaugrana’s social media account and official site confirming the development approaching midday in Catalonia.
“FC Barcelona and the player Ousmane Dembele have reached an agreement for a contract until 30 June 2024,” a statement read from the La Liga giants.
Dembele signs his new contract after allowing his previous arrangement to expire on June 30.
The new agreement also comes following the arrival of positional rival Raphinha, who joined the club from Leeds United in a €58mn deal on Tuesday.
“Dembele was 20 years old when he joined Barça in the summer of 2017 from Borussia Dortmund, and made his debut on September 9 against Espanyol, contributing an assist to a 5-0 win. But despite his highly promising start, he never quite managed to get into his full stride due to an unfortunate string of different injuries,” the club said of the 2018 World Cup winner.
After contract negotiations reached a standstill at the turn of 2022, it looked as though Dembele would be on his way out of Catalonia no thanks to the unrealistic demands made by his agent Moussa Sissoko of a club in around $1.5bn’s worth of debt.
Against the wishes of many fans, head coach Xavi Hernandez refused to send Dembele to watch the rest of the season from the stands and managed to extract top form from the right winger.
Through a litanny of assists, he helped Barca qualify for the Champions League next term but was still linked with moves away from Camp Nou to the likes of Chelsea and Paris Saint Germain.
Around a fortnight, however, it was reported that Dembele had decided to stay put and would take a significant pay cut to continue plying his trade in Blaugrana.
In Catalonia, it has been said for some time that Dembele will be paid something in the region of €6-7mn ($6.1-7.1mn) per season which is more or less what teenage wonderkids Ansu Fati and Pedri currently take home.
Now that Dembele has been secured, Xavi can focus on making plans that involve the clearly talented forward known as the ‘Mosquito’.
