The first three episodes of Hulu’s new limited series Murdaugh: Death in the Family are now streaming. Inspired by real-life events, the series explores the chilling double homicide of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, a mother and son from a powerful South Carolina family led by patriarch and lawyer Alex Murdaugh.
“Maggie and Alex enjoy a lavish life of privilege as members of one of South Carolina’s most powerful legal dynasties. But when their son Paul is involved in a deadly boat crash, the family is faced with a test unlike any they’ve ever encountered,” the synopsis reads. “As details come to light and new challenges emerge, the family’s connections to several mysterious deaths raise questions which threaten everything Maggie and Alex hold dear.”
Two years after the boat crash, the bodies of Margaret and Paul Murdaugh were found dead from multiple gunshot wounds near the dog kennels at the family’s home in Islandton, South Carolina. Alex Murdaugh, who called 911 to report the chilling discovery, was charged with their murders 13 months later, according to ABC News.
Created by Michael D. Fuller and Erin Lee Carr, the eight-part miniseries is based on the Murdaugh Murders Podcast by Mandy Matney (portrayed by Brittany Snow in the show). Showrunner Michael D. Fuller told TV Insider that when creating the series, they focused on Mandy’s access and insights, as well as their own perspectives on what the story could be — and what it ultimately was.
“It’s really with the benefit of Mandy’s reporting and her insight and her personal connections to the quasi-Murdaugh community of people who lived through it, survived it, and then, a cast of this magnitude that’s able to bring to life what they’re able to bring to life,” he continued.
The cast also includes Jason Clarke as Alex Murdaugh, Patricia Arquette as Maggie Murdaugh, Johnny Berchtold as Paul Murdaugh, as well as Will Harrison, J. Smith-Cameron, Gerald McRaney and Noah Emmerich.
