Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has always been outspoken about his love for things Metal. In 2022, the rock icon seems to be embracing this side of his artistry even more, with the release of a Foo-Fighters themed horror movie, Studio 666, and also a full length metal album to go with it. As tradition goes, horror and metal are an inseparable pairing, and it just so happens that the plot of Studio 666 revolves around a fictional metal band called Dream Widow.
In an interview with Howard Stern, Grohl outlined the plot of the film stating, “the premise of the movie is that [Foo Fighters] move into this house, I have writer’s block, I’m totally uninspired, I can’t come up with anything, and I wind up finding this creepy basement. And I go into the basement, I find this tape by a band from 25 years ago that recorded there. And there’s this song that, if recorded and completed, the f**king demon in the house is unleashed, and then, whatever, all hell breaks loose.”
Earlier this week Foo Fighters ‘unleashed’ the first taste of this demonic music via the thrashy-death metal track “March of the Insane.”
As goofy as it is, this track is easily one of Grohl’s heaviest musical endeavors to date. While it’s a rather straightforward thrash banger, it brings further intrigue to what else is in-store for this Dream Widow LP.
Speaking of, more news regarding the full length album came from an interview with Rolling Stone, where Grohl mentioned plans to release a Dream Widow album around the films February 25th release. “It will be the lost album,” Grohl states. “It’ll be the album they were making before he f**king killed the entire band.” Grohl went on to state some of album’s influences, specifically on the record’s 13 minute track “Lacrimus dei Ebrius.” “You’ll hear a lot of those influences in ‘Lacrimus dei Ebrius’ because for that song, I put maybe four or five of these sections together in this big, long thing. Some of it sounds like Trouble [Doom metal band]; some of it sounds like Corrosion of Conformity; some of it has a Kyuss vibe.”
It seems Dream Widow will be comprised of an array of metal sub-genres and influences, so much so that it’s possible the record could have a number of guest appearances. Back in 2004 Grohl actually put together an all-star metal side project called Probot. The debut album from Probot featured a variety of metal icons from Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister, King Diamond, to Sepultura’s Max Cavalera. Obviously Grohl is no stranger to the metal world, and given Studio 666’s imminent release date there’s sure to be more details out soon regarding this Dream Widow LP.
