Daryl Hall Granted Restraining Order Against Ex-Bandmate John Oates

Topline

Daryl Hall—previously one-half of music duo Hall & Oates—was granted a temporary restraining order against his former bandmate, John Oates, amid a lawsuit filed last week in Nashville that is under seal.

Key Facts

The temporary restraining order request starts on November 30 at 9:30 a.m., according to records in Nashville Chancery Court—it’s not clear what the order entails.

Oates’ wife Aimee and reported business manager Richard Flynn are also listed as defendants in the lawsuit, and are classified as co-trustees of the John W. Oates TISA Trust, the court record shows.

The lawsuit was filed on November 16, and is labeled as a “Contract/Debt” case.

Further details on the reasons for the lawsuit are unclear, as the complaint is under seal.

Neither Hall’s attorney nor a representative for Oates immediately responded to a request for comment from Forbes.

Key Background

Hall and Oates met while at Temple University in 1967. The duo, known for hits such as “You Make My Dreams (Come True)” and “Rich Girl,” released 18 studio albums together as Hall & Oates from 1972 to 2006. Last March, Hall told the Los Angeles Times he didn’t have plans to work with Oates in the future despite previously mentioning it. Hall said after the pandemic, “perceptions changed,” and he was “more interested in pursuing my own world,” as was Oates. While appearing on an episode of the podcast “Club Random with Bill Maher” last September, Hall said he and Oates “are brothers, but we are not creative brothers.” He added that the two “are business partners” who made records together, but that “we’ve always been very separate, and that’s a really important thing for me.”
