Darth Maul has long been a fan-favorite villain from the Star Wars prequel movies, despite not actually showing up in much of the action before getting sliced in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Still, the Sith and his dual-bladed red lightsaber has popped up in other Star Wars projects over the years, even making a brief cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018, teasing his involvement in a possible sequel that never materialized.
Now, Darth Maul is returning in what looks like a pretty exciting new animated series on Disney+. Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord premieres on the streaming service on April 6th. Two episodes will stream each week from April 6th through May 4th – aka May The Fourth (be with you).
The series is set after the events of The Clone Wars, following Maul as he plots to help rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet far from the Empire’s grasp. This sounds a bit like the plot of The Book Of Boba Fett; hopefully it will have a more engaging story.
The trailer is certainly filled with exciting action and some really lovely animation:
In Maul – Shadow Lord, Maul encounters a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who he hopes to recruit as his new apprentice. Not many other details are known.
The series was created by Dave Filoni, now one of the co-chiefs of Lucasfilm. Its voice cast includes Sam Witwer as Maul, Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson, Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots, Dennis Haysbert as Master Eeko-dio-Daki, Chris Diamantopoulos as Looti Vario, Charlie Bushnell as Rylee Lawson, Vanessa Marshall as Rook Kast, David C. Collins as Spybot, A.J. LoCascio as Marrok and Steve Blum as Icarus.
