Darren Star Says Season 3 Is All About Consequences

Emily is still in Paris, and she’s not coming home anytime soon.

It’s been a year since Lily Collins’ Emily Cooper moved from Chicago to Paris for her dream job. She’s since lived through a whirlwind of love affairs and work dilemmas, and now she finds herself at a crucial crossroads in both aspects of her life.

In an interview, Emmy award-winning creator and showrunner Darren Star explained the theme of season three of the Emmy-nominated Netflix series Emily In Paris. “It’s about the power of making choices and the consequences that follow.”

Emily’s life in France has been anything but boring, and now she has to make serious decisions about her future. Star is excited for the episodes to premiere, and he described how this season is unique.

“In my mind, this season is a significant evolution from the last two seasons. We’re not seeing the whole world through the perspective of Emily in season three the way we have in previous seasons,” said Star. “Now we’re also seeing Paris through the other characters’ perspectives, which makes the show richer and deeper and, hopefully, more entertaining.”

Star explained season one was about Emily getting acclimated to Paris and adjusting to a new culture. Season two, he added, was about her leaving her comfort zone. She made many life-changing decisions, and now we see her deal with the fallout.

Her love life has been a beautiful disaster, and though she’s currently with Alfie (Lucien Laviscount), it’s clear that she and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) have unfinished business. They’ve friend-zoned one another, and this seems to be the right decision as Gabriel and Camille (Camille Razat) are also trying to make their relationship work.

Star is well-known for writing about complex women who love and work hard, and viewers enjoy the escapism into the fantasy worlds he creates. He’s renowned for bringing Candace Bushnell’s 1997 book Sex and the City to life with the hit television series of the same name. Two films followed the Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning HBO comedy, which ran for six seasons (94 episodes) from 1998 to 2004.

He has a winning formula; Sex and the City and Emily In Paris have cult followings. Viewers can’t get enough of the unfolding lives of the characters he creates and the fabulous fashion they wear while fumbling and overcoming obstacles in their careers and love lives. He has a knack for writing memorable male and female characters, but the women he’s created will forever hold a place in our hearts.

In a past interview, Star described how much he enjoys writing strong female characters. “I love that they’re very expressive in how they feel; each has a great sense of humor. I enjoy that they say what’s on their minds and aren’t as guarded as some male characters. And, as a writer, you want to write characters that have challenges to overcome. The thing is, I can put myself in their shoes and relate to their experiences. We’re all driven by the same desires, men and women, and we want the same things at the end of the day.”

At the time, Star said the women in his life inspired his writing. “The characters I write are very strong-minded, independent women who are very much in control of their destiny, and women enjoy seeing themselves reflected that way. I’ve known all the strong, independent women I’ve written.”

Emily took a huge risk when she moved to Paris. Who hasn’t had the fantasy of starting over in a new and exotic locale? Star certainly has. His dream began with his trip to Paris years ago. “Hopefully, this inspires people to take that chance and have that experience and go outside their comfort zone. It is really about stepping into the unknown.”

There is quite the cliffhanger at the end of season three, and Star confirmed a fourth season. Again, Emily has gotten into quite a bind, and we cannot wait to see what she does and wears next. We want to see her conquer every step of the way in her stylish stilettos and fabulous couture.

When asked how many seasons he sees in Emily’s future, Star explained that he doesn’t have a “firm agenda” on how long a show will last, nor does he have an ending in mind at the outset. “I think that is because you discover so much by making the series as the world of the characters keeps evolving. With Emily in Paris, I see opportunities for growth.”

The 10-episode third season drops on December 21 on Netflix. The brilliant cast includes Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Ashley Park, Samuel Arnold, Bruno Gouery, and William Abadie. Emily In Paris is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, Darren Star Productions, and Jax Media.
