Craft Cocktails, Mexican Herbalism, And Female Empowerment Collide At This All-Female Staffed CDMX Bar

Mexico City certainly isn’t short on great places to drink, though in terms of unique cocktail experiences, Brujas is making waves across the industry. Located in the city’s vibrant Roma Norte neighborhood, this female-led cocktail bar brings more than light bites and creative cocktails to the table—and the proof is in the brains behind the award-winning bar.

“Brujas is an all-female cocktail bar that takes its name from the building that holds it, La Casa de Las Brujas (The House of the Witches), due to its resemblance to a witch’s hat, but also for having been home of Pachita, one of Mexico’s most memorable shamans,” Lozada explains. The bar’s unique cocktail list is based on Mexican herbalism, highlighting herbs such as white sage, rue, magnolia, rose pepper, and wildflowers.

“The cocktail program honors all the grandmothers, great-great-grandmothers, mothers, and women who in times past, were able to cure everything, from a broken heart to clinical illnesses with the help of herbs, flowers, barks, and more,” Lozada reveals. In addition to crafting cocktails, the bar team at Brujas also concocts the sodas, tinctures, and infusions, as well as flower honeys, used in the flavor-packed drinks.

Beyond Mexican herbalism, Brujas’ current menu, entitled Women in Action, also pays homage to female activists and writers who have inspired the bar team members in some way. The menu appropriately launched on March 8th, International Women’s Day, and features 12 cocktails, each named after a prominent woman who left a profound mark on history.

In the realm of cocktail culture, Lozada herself is sure to leave a lasting impression. Lozada started working in the hospitality industry at the age of 16—and her numerous clumsy feats with serving trays is actually what got her behind the bar in the first place. From her early bar days, she became fascinated with the creation of cocktails, specifically the art of creating them. It was ultimately at the world-renowned cocktail bar Hanky Panky where Lozada was first able to fully tap into her cocktail-making potential, along with prior experience at Pujol, which helped to greatly expand her understanding of Mexican flavors.

Today, under Lozada’s meticulous guidance, Bruajs continues to break boundaries across Mexico City’s cocktail scene. The all-women staffed bar recently garnered a coveted position (No. 64) on The World’s 50 Best Bars of 2022 extended list. Lozada cites figures of remarkable women who were branded as witches simply for “having a different school of thought at their time” as some of her biggest influences.

So what’s next for Brujas? “Keep on empowering women from the industry and creating spaces where they have a leading role,” Lozada states firmly.
