Disney has announced its newest attraction, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will open at Walt Disney World’s EPCOT on May 27, 2022. The new family-thrill coaster is based on Marvel’s clan of characters of the same name. The attraction is set to be one of the longest enclosed coasters in the world.
The new attraction takes the place of the former Universe of Energy pavilion which housed Ellen’s Energy Adventure starring Ellen Degeneres and Bill Nye the Science Guy. The story starts off with the Wonders of Xandar pavilion, which is set to be EPCOT’s first “other-world” showcase, a clever play on words of the popular World Showcase area of the park that features different countries around the world.
Once inside the pavilion, guests will learn about the technology and culture of Xandar, in the Galaxarium, which is going to be similar to a planetarium exhibition. According to Disney, guests will be called to join Rocket, Groot, Gamora, and Star-Lord as things go sideways while on the tour. The Guardians will need their help on a mission “through an exciting space pursuit.”
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will be Disney’s first reverse launch coaster, and each individual ride car will be able to rotate 360 degrees so riders can be pointed towards all of the action. The best way to think of this is as a rollercoaster combined with an omnimover attraction like Haunted Mansion where the ride vehicle can rotate so riders can see certain show scenes.
The roller coaster will be the latest addition to the long list of things opening or getting refurbished during Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary celebrations, and the multi-year transformation of EPCOT. Other new additions to EPCOT include the Space 220 restaurant, the Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure attraction, and the new nighttime show, Harmonious.
Disney also released a new ad for the attraction, which can be viewed below.
