Conservative Radio Host Larry Elder Joins Race For 2024 GOP Nomination

Topline

Conservative radio host Larry Elder Thursday announced a presidential run on Thursday, becoming the fourth challenger to take on former President Donald Trump for the Republican Party’s nomination for the 2024 election.

Key Facts

Elder made the announcement while appearing on Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s show saying he feels “a moral, religious and a patriotic duty,” to give back to the country.

When asked by Carlson about what particular issue was driving him to run, Elder said he wants to push back against the Democrats’ “absolute disgraceful lie” that America is systemically racist.

Shortly after his appearance, Elder issued a statement on Twitter saying the country needs to choose a leader who can bring it to a “new American Golden Age,” as he unveiled the website and slogan for his campaign.

Elder joins an increasingly crowded GOP field to take on former President Donald Trump who announced his run last year.

Key Background

Elder is the fifth candidate to officially announce plans to run for the Republican nomination. The GOP field is led by former President Donald Trump who, according to FiveThirtyEight’s analysis of national polls, enjoys a comfortable lead over his rivals. Others who have officially joined the race include Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. Elder’s 2024 run will be his second bid for public office after he unsuccessfully ran against California Gov. Gavin Newsom in a recall election in 2021. Newsom managed to comfortably beat the recall votes by nearly 24 points. Elder was the longtime host of the nationally syndicated radio talk show “The Larry Elder Show.” Elder ended the show last year, shortly after launching a political action committee to support local GOP candidates in California as well as help the party take back the House and Senate.

What To Watch For

President Joe Biden is set to announce his plans to run for reelection in 2024, sometime next week, the Washington Post reported. The announcement is expected on Tuesday, which will coincide with the anniversary of the launch of his 2020 campaign, the report adds. On the GOP side, all eyes are on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis who is expected to be Trump’s main challenger for the 2024 GOP nomination.
