Consensys, the Ethereum-focused blockchain software firm, has acquired wallet infrastructure provider Web3Auth in a deal aimed at transforming the MetaMask user experience. The financial terms were not disclosed.
With this move, Consensys targets one of the biggest pain points in crypto self-custody: seed phrase management. According to internal data, 35% of users fail to back up their seed phrases—putting their digital assets at serious risk if devices are lost.
Web2 Logins Replace Manual Seed Phrases
The integration of Web3Auth technology into MetaMask will introduce familiar web2 login methods such as social media credentials and device-based authentication. This eliminates the need for users to manually store or remember seed phrases, significantly reducing the chances of losing wallet access.
Consensys believes that lowering this barrier will make self-custody more secure and accessible for mainstream users.
MetaMask Prepares for Multi-Chain Future
Beyond security upgrades, the acquisition supports MetaMask’s expansion beyond Ethereum-compatible chains. Web3Auth’s infrastructure accelerates MetaMask’s roadmap for adding support for non-EVM chains like Solana and Bitcoin.
MetaMask already integrated Solana via its browser extension last week. Full Bitcoin functionality is expected in Q3, setting the stage for seamless, gasless cross-chain transactions within the wallet.
With this strategic acquisition, Consensys positions MetaMask as a user-friendly, secure, and truly multi-chain wallet, aligning with the evolving needs of global crypto users.
