Connecticut To Begin Selling Adult-Use Cannabis In January

Good news for Connecticut: The state’s legal adult-use cannabis market is rolling out on January 10, 2023. This means that licensed hybrid retailers may begin selling cannabis products to all adults 21 and over on that date.

On the official launch of the operational market, DCP Commissioner Michelle H. Seagull said in a statement, “I am proud of the hard work our team has done to meet the goal of opening adult-use sales in a safe, well-regulated market. We know that many people are excited to participate in this marketplace, whether as a business or a consumer, and we encourage adults who choose to purchase and consume these products to do so responsibly once sales begin on January 10.”

Highlights of the rules and regulations of the state’s market include the following:

*Sales will be limited to 1/4 ounce of cannabis flower, or its equivalent, per transaction when the market opens. Medical marijuana patients may purchase up to 5 ounces per month; and,

*Different types and sizes of products may be purchased together up to a total of 1/4 ounce of cannabis flower or its equivalent per transaction.

Here’s an interesting tidbit: According to a news announcement rolling out the legal adult-use market, medical marijuana patients “are advised to purchase any necessary medication prior to January 10, or at one of the nine medical-only dispensaries in the state, as long lines and traffic are expected around the hybrid retailers during the opening weeks of adult-use sales.”

The impending opening of this market has some in the legal cannabis community rejoicing—but with caution. Though Michelle Bodian, counsel at leading cannabis law firm Vicente Sederberg LLP, quibbled about the limited number of hybrid retailers, she applauded the state’s ability to transition to an operational market within a brief span of time.

“Even with the product limit, today is a day to celebrate,” she said. “In 30 days, adult-use cannabis sales [in Connecticut] will commence. It’s worth noting that 1.5 years from legalization to sale is quick, as compared to many other states.”

Connecticut legalized recreational cannabis in 2021.
