Coinbase is officially entering the global commerce space with the launch of Coinbase Payments, a full-stack stablecoin payments infrastructure designed to bring instant USDC payments to platforms like Shopify, PSPs, and marketplaces.
The solution promises 24/7 global transactions, lower fees, and no blockchain complexity for merchants.

What Is Coinbase Payments?
Built on Base, Coinbase’s Layer-2 blockchain, the platform includes three core components:
- Stablecoin Checkout – A wallet-native interface supporting USDC payments across wallets like Coinbase Wallet, MetaMask, and Phantom. It offers a gasless, optimized user experience for consumers.
- Ecommerce Engine – The backend API layer that allows merchant platforms and PSPs to handle key operations like authorization, capture, refunds, ledgering, and subscriptions—all without needing blockchain expertise.
- Commerce Payments Protocol – Open-source smart contracts that replicate traditional payment mechanics (escrow, delayed capture, refunds) with onchain execution. Runs on Base for fast, low-cost transactions.
Live with Shopify: USDC for Millions of Merchants
The stack is already live with Shopify, where it enables merchants to accept USDC payments worldwide, instantly and without additional setup. Shopify integrates all three layers of Coinbase Payments to deliver a smooth onchain checkout, backend transaction processing, and smart contract–based settlement.
