Christian Eriksen might have only played in four competitive games for Manchester United so far, with two of those resulting in losses, but he has been a standout under Erik Ten Hag in his early tenure.
The Denmark international was signed on a free transfer after leaving Brentford at the end of last season. While it took him several weeks to finally accept Ten Hag’s offer, Eriksen signed for Manchester United and has already become somewhat of a fan’s favourite.
It has been clear to see to all that the Red Devils have struggled in the last few seasons in midfield due to lack of quality, reliability and consistency in there. With the additions of Eriksen and Casemiro, Man United certainly have a stronger midfield to go up against teams with.
Eriksen’s versatility will be a huge bonus as the season gets underway through all competitions. Already, the Dane has been deployed in most areas of midfield and even as a false nine, which backfired hugely against Brighton & Hove Albion on the opening day.
With Casemiro’s arrival, who is expected to slot in as a number six in front of the two central defenders, it will allow the likes of Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes to roam forward more regularly and not be as worried about a loss in possession. Now having the ‘cement between the stones’ as Ten Hag likes to says will be somewhat of a burden lifted for Manchester United.
Eriksen has posed a threat in the final third but not nearly as much as he can. Against Liverpool was his best performance in a Red Devils shirt where the team were playing on the front foot and the Denmark international had time to pick out passess and transition from defence into attack.
The midfield maestro’s eye for a pass is sublime, but the ability to execute it in one simple motion is nothing short of spectacular. With Manchest
er United looking to play more possession-dominant matches this season, Eriksen will come into his own in the final third with his link up play and smart interchanges.
On a free transfer with leadership qualities and experience that he has, it was a no brainer for Ten Hag to want to bring him in. With the ability to fill in where needed in midfield, Eriksen is a fantastic asset to have in the squad.
Ten Hag has made some important signings during his first transfer window in charge of Manchester United, but none might be as useful as Eriksen could provide to be over the course of this season.
