Chris Brown Released On Bail After UK Arrest

Topline

Singer Chris Brown was freed on bail Wednesday by a London court following his charge last week for “grievous bodily harm” in connection with an alleged 2023 incident, indicating his upcoming tour will be able to proceed in early June.

Key Facts

Brown was held in custody in the U.K. after his charge, as prosecutors accused him of attacking music producer Abe Diaw in a London nightclub in 2023.

Brown was previously denied bail Friday, but was granted a bail of 5 million pounds Wednesday, equivalent to about $6.7 million.

His next scheduled court date is June 20, and the court required him to surrender his passport except while touring, BBC reported.

The singer was not required to enter a plea.

When Does Brown’s Tour Start?

Brown’s world tour kicks off in the Netherlands on June 8. Prior to being granted bail, Brown would have remained in custody until at least his previously scheduled June 13 court date, which would have caused him to miss the first two shows of his tour, the Associated Press reported. Brown will tour in the United Kingdom between June 15 and July 3.

What Do We Know About The Alleged Assault?

Prosecutors accused Brown of striking Diaw with a bottle multiple times and punching and kicking him in Tape, a nightclub in London. The incident was caught on surveillance footage and occurred in front of a club full of people. Diaw told British outlet The Sun last week Brown “hit me over the head two or three times” at the nightclub and his “knee collapsed.” Diaw sued Brown over the alleged incident in October 2023. HoodyBaby, an American rapper whose real name is Omolulu Akinlolu, was arrested and charged one day after Brown in connection with the incident, and he is also due to appear in court on June 20.

Key Background

Brown, 36, has long courted controversy and faced numerous charges over allegedly violent behavior. Brown was arrested after an argument with then-girlfriend Rihanna turned physical, later pleading guilty to felony assault in 2009 and receiving a sentence of five years probation, domestic violence counseling and community labor. He violated his probation in 2013 by punching a man in the nose, receiving an assault charge. He was sent to rehab, where he violated the facility’s internal rules, prompting a court to sentence him to jail where he served three months. An anonymous woman accused Brown of raping her on a yacht owned by Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is currently on trial for sex trafficking and racketeering, in the 2024 Warner Bros. documentary “Chris Brown: A History of Violence.” Brown denied the allegation and sued Warner Bros. for defamation.
