Charlize Theron’s ‘The Old Guard 2’ Premieres On Netflix This Week

The Old Guard 2 — a sequel to the Charlize Theron fantasy superhero hit from 2020 — arrives on Netflix this week.

The official synopsis for The Old Guard 2 reads, “Andy (Theron) and her team of immortal warriors are back, with a renewed sense of purpose in their mission to protect the world. With Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) still in exile after his betrayal, and Quynh (Veronica Ngô) out for revenge after escaping her underwater prison, Andy grapples with her newfound mortality as a mysterious threat emerges that could jeopardize everything she’s worked towards for thousands of years.

“Andy, Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli) and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) enlist the help of Tuah (Henry Golding), an old friend who may provide the key to unlocking the mystery behind immortal existence.”

Directed by Victoria Mahoney, The Old Guard 2 also stars Uma Thurman. The film is based on The Old Guard graphic novels (Image Comics) by Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernandez.

The Old Guard 2 will begin streaming on Wednesday, July 2, at 3 a.m. ET / 12 a.m. PT on Netflix.

Critics Largley Saluted 2020’s ‘The Old Guard’

Reviews are not yet available for The Old Guard 2. The first film, however, was a hit with critics.

The Old Guard received an 80% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 285 reviews, while audiences gave the film a 70% “fresh” score on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 2,500-plus verified user ratings.

The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “The Old Guard is occasionally restricted by genre conventions, but director Gina Prince-Bythewood brings a sophisticated vision to the superhero genre – and some knockout action sequences led by Charlize Theron.”
