Celtics vs. Warriors Game 3 Betting Preview & Prediction

Boston stunned Golden State with a statement victory in the opener. The Eastern Conference champs stumbled in Game 2 but have a great chance to bounce back tonight as the C’s are favorites for the first time in the series and the action is shifting to the TD Garden.

Bookmakers are projecting a tight battle despite both initial Finals clashes being rather lopsided. Boston took Game 1 by 12 points before the Dubs evened things up with a 19-point margin of victory in the following contest.

With the 2022 NBA Finals effectively becoming a best-of-five series, Game 3 will be a critical one. The Warriors are seeking to regain homecourt advantage after it was taken from them, an endeavor far easier said than done against these Celtics.

The C’s have been a strong home side this year, going after 33-17 straight-up across the regular season and subsequent playoffs on their parquet floor. Golden State struggled at times on the road in the same span, posting a 25-23 SU record away from the Chase Center.

Boston isn’t invincible at home, however, as the team is just 5-4 at the TD Garden during the 2022 NBA Playoffs. The Warriors have also won at least one away matchup in 26 consecutive postseason series and boast the collective experience to win big games on the road.

Expect both squads to give their all given the historical importance of this matchup. In the 39 times that NBA Finals participants have split the first two games of a series, the Game 3 winner has gone on to lift the Larry O’Brien on 32 occasions.

Defense has and will play a big part in determining a winner in this series. The Warriors were lax in Game 1, allowing Boston to shoot over 50 percent from both the floor and beyond the arc. The team clamped down in Game 2 though, limiting the Celtics to a playoff-low 88 points while allowing them to make a meager 37.5 percent of their field goal attempts.

Boston is still trying to unearth a consistent defensive plan for Golden State superstar Steph Curry. While the squad did well in the opener after Curry hit six threes and exploded for 21 points in the first quarter—limiting him to just 13 more points for the rest of the game—he went off for a game-high 29 points while hitting five threes in Game 2.

The Celtics also need consistency on offense. Jayson Tatum bounced back from a quiet 12-point night in Game 1 to score 28 points in Game 2 but received little support from his teammates in the loss. Marcus Smart, Al Horford and Robert Williams III notched just two points apiece on Sunday night, a disappointing showing after the three starters combined for 52 points to open the 2022 NBA Finals.

With that abysmal performance behind them, the C’s should bounce back in front of the home crowd this evening. They’ll likely still struggle to contain a future Hall of Famer in Curry, but they have the defensive prowess to lock down Golden State’s other scorers—such as Jordan Poole, who was second on the team with 17 points in Game 2—and take Game 3.

Pick: Celtics -3.5

Prediction: Celtics 107 – Warriors 103
