Captain Blood gets a release date after 20 years

After a long wait, the release date of Captain Blood by Seawold Studio has been announced for May 6, 2025. This was a shelved Xbox 660 project inspired by Rafael Sabatini’s Italian novels.

The action-adventure game is set in 17th-century Spanish Main. Players will have to navigate the life of a pirate captain. The developers have included gory battles in the game, as the captain’s name suggests.

Captain Blood’s journey reflects the struggles of Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, which had to wait years to overcome hurdles before its release in 2024. The game has gone through different ideas and disappeared in 2010 after its showcase.

The announcement trailer for its release date shared that the game will be coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, GOG, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Using a hack-and-slash combat style, Captain Blood is looking for gold and fame in the sea.

From the trailer, it looks like Captain Blood is inspired by dangerous pirates like Vaas Montenegro in Far Cry 3 and Edward Kenway in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. There is also the expectation of fighting groups of enemies with over-the-top weapons.

Captain Blood may become a cult favorite for its classic vibe

Captain Blood will be released in the year that games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Assasin’s Creed Shadows, and The First Berserker: Khazan are set to launch.

It’s uncertain if the game can compete strongly with the 2025 releases; however, it does have the potential to be a cult favorite for its classic vibe. In one of the gaming forums, a user wrote, “As someone with a lot of fond memories of gaming in the 2000s, this looks like a really fun blast from the past,” as this kind of game is rare to get made anymore.

Other users also compared the vibe of this game to God of War on PS2 with “7th gen sensibilities”.
