There are some video game franchises that take an awful long time between game releases.
We’re still waiting to see whether or not Half-Life 3 ever comes out, but games we know are in the works like Elder Scrolls VI and GTA VI are sequels long in the making.
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim originally launched in 2011. GTA V came out two years later. There is nothing even resembling a release date for either of these sequels.
Unlike your yearly Call Of Duty or Assassin’s Creed games, these franchises seem designed to actively keep you from parting with your money for as long as humanly possible.
Then there are the games that you really hope get a sequel but you’re never quite sure that day will come. For me, one such game has been Dragon’s Dogma, a Japanese RPG from Capcom that I rank as one of my all-time favorites. Sure, we got the Dark Arisen expansion/overhaul which was great, but Dragon’s Dogma came out a decade ago and until now, there hasn’t been so much as a whisper as to whether it would ever get a sequel.
Today, during a 10th anniversary retrospective for Dragon’s Dogma, game director Hideaki Itsuno revealed finally that Dragon’s Dogma II is currently in development at Capcom. At the very end of the video (below) he dramatically unzips his jacket to reveal the Dragon’s Dogma II logo.
This is exciting news. Dragon’s Dogma is such a singular experience. There’s really no other game quite like it. The combat is terrific. The Pawn system—where you can “hire” the NPC companions of other players to join you in your adventures—is charming and clever. The world of Gransys is deep and fascinating. Along with Dark Souls (a franchise with a much more regular release cycle) this is one of my all-time favorite action-JRPGs.
And now we finally get a sequel. Someday. There’s really nothing else we know about the game at this point other than that it’s in development and will presumably release sometime in the future. Hopefully not the distant future. Hopefully before Eldern Scrolls VI, Half-Life 3 and, one supposes, The Winds Of Winter.
