This weekend is full of high-stakes boxing matches, with fight cards taking place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of Cinco de Mayo weekend. Saturday’s fight card, which takes place at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, sees Canelo Alvarez put his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles on the line against IBF super middleweight champion William Scull in the main event. The rumor mill was working overtime last week when it came to Alvarez. Initial reports from The Ring (since deleted) said an “agreement is in place” for Alvarez to put his super middleweight title on the line against Terence Crawford. Not long after that, ESPN reported that Alvarez was “in the process of finalizing a deal” to face Jake Paul on May 3, and that, “Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, is suspending efforts to finalize contracts for an Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford…”
It didn’t take long for talk of the Paul fight to fall by the wayside as The Ring reported that Alvarez had inked a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season. The final piece of Alvarez news came down on February 8 when Alalshikh announced WBO, WBA, and WBC super middleweight champion Alvarez would face undefeated IBF champion Scull in May for the undisputed super middleweight title.
Alvarez had held the undisputed super middleweight crown, but the IBF stripped Alvarez of its belt in July 2024 after Alvarez failed to make a mandatory title defense against Scull. Scull (23-0 with nine knockouts) won the vacant title in October with a decision win over Vladimir Shishkin.
Alvarez (62-2-2 with 39 knockouts) is coming off a September decision win over Edgar Berlanga in defense of his WBA, WBC, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles.

Let’s get this out of the way. Alvarez is more or less taking this fight to regain the IBF title he didn’t lose in the ring so that he can once again claim the crown of undisputed super middleweight champion. The other reason Alvarez is taking this fight is as a warmup for a bigger fight down the road in 2025, possibly an enormously lucrative bout against Terence “Bud” Crawford. As for Scull, this fight should earn him an excellent payday, but no one expects him to pull off the upset on Saturday. He has not faced any competition in his undefeated career compared to Alvarez.
Scull does have good footwork and speed, which should aid him defensively in this bout. He is also good at moving in and out without taking much damage. But again, these skills have come against competition that is not near the same level as Alvarez. Like Alvarez, Scull is a counter puncher, which could make this fight interesting if neither man is willing to take the lead.
Alvarez has not pushed himself over his past few fights, mainly because he hasn’t needed to do so. The problem with that is that fans don’t want to see Alvarez in a glorified sparring outing. Alvarez has the skills to beat an opponent like Scull without putting himself in danger, which could make for a workmanlike performance.

Alvarez has not scored a knockout since he downed Caleb Plant in 2021. He’s gone the distance in each of his past six outings, including his May 2022 decision loss to Dmitry Bivol. Don’t look for much to change on Saturday night. The betting pick is for Canelo Alvarez to beat William Scull by decision, but the value is betting on Alvarez to win via knockout.
