Bryan Wright was the artistic director for a small company in South Carolina when, in late 2021, Russia began massing forces along the border with Ukraine.
Watching as war clouds gathered, Wright felt an impulse to do … something. And when the Russians attacked on Feb. 24, he decided to act.
Just one problem. Actually, several problems. Wright knew no one in Ukraine, had no experience in a war zone and, despite the strength of his convictions, had no clear idea of what he should do … or whether it would matter.
He boarded a plane anyway, traveling first to Poland and then across the border into Ukraine. What followed was a dangerous comedy of errors as Wright figured out, the hard way, what Ukraine needed from him—and what he needed from Ukraine.
Six months later, Wright returned home a changed man. CIVILIAN: ONE GUY’S CRAZY MISSION TO UKRAINE—our multi-part docuseries—is his story, in his own words and including video he shot in Ukraine.
CIVILIAN isn’t just about one man and his gonzo plan to help Ukraine win the war. It’s about millions of everyday people—Ukrainians, of course, but also their friends from abroad—who have risked everything to defend Ukraine from Russian aggression.
In part one, Wright makes the most important decision of his life—and immediately wonders if it’s also the biggest mistake of his life.
