The Brooklyn Nets and restricted free agent guard Cam Thomas have agreed to a contract after not coming to terms on an extension for the 5th year guard. Thomas accepted the Nets $6 million qualifying offer, which will make him a free agent next season.
With this contract, Thomas gets a no-trade clause, and it allows him to be an unrestricted free agent and truly test the market next off-season. Throughout his four seasons in Brooklyn Thomas has averaged 15.1 points per game and while shooting 44 percent from the field and with a 55 percent true-shooting percentage. His explosive scoring ability and elite self-creation skills have been made apparent throughout his career thus far. Due to injury, Thomas was only able to play in 25 games last season, which likely negatively impacted his value in the eyes of the Nets. Another common critique of Thomas’ game is that his playmaking and passing is beyond subpar. Thomas has only averaged 2.1 assists in his career. Although Thomas is an immensely talented scorer, his lack of passing ability is something that places a cap on his ceiling.
By signing this qualifying offer, it is likely that Thomas is looking to exit Brooklyn after this season, and intends to use this season to audition himself for the teams that will have cap space this summer. At just 23 years-old Thomas has loads of potential, it’s just up to him to fully capitalize on it.
