Suga released his long-awaited debut album D-Day on Friday (April 21), and it took only a matter of hours for it to not only become the top-selling title in his home country, but for the project to make important history.
According to the Hanteo chart–one of the two main music charts in South Korea–the album recorded a remarkable 1,072,311 copies sold on its first day of release. Hanteo shares real-time sales data, so fans and people in the industry can see how a brand new release is performing in just the first day or even the first few hours it’s available.
D-Day has broken the previous record for the most impressive first-day sales for any album by a solo artist in Hanteo history. That honor was previously held by Suga’s BTS bandmate Jimin. That singer-songwriter’s solo effort Face sold just over one million units on the first day of its release just last month. According to Hanteo, Face racked up 1.022 million purchases in its initial 24 hours.
It’s important to note that the 1,072,311 copies sold is just the first-day sales of D-Day. The album still has six more days to go before its debut week is through, so it is expected that this sum will grow considerably.
D-Day was released under the name Agust D, which Suga often uses when producing music outside of BTS. D-Day marks Suga–or Agust D’s–third full-length collection released on his own, though the first two were marketed as mixtapes. That makes this latest offering just a bit more special, and that may help explain it’s phenomenal sales success right out of the gate.
