Brock Lesnar slayed the giant Omos with an impressive F-5 in an extremely heated match at WrestleMania 39.
The match told a basic story of Brock Lesnar trying to chop the big tree down, as Lesnar found himself in a rare position where he was, by far, the smaller competitor. Omos looked just fine in his role as the menacing giant, pummeling Lesnar with strikes and body slams as SoFi Stadium rallied behind Brock.
When WWE announced Brock Lesnar vs. Omos for WrestleMania 39, it elicited a collective groan from many of the monolithic wrestling snobs within the Internet Wrestling Community. With Brock Lesnar and Lashley seemingly destined for a collision course after a non-finish at Elimination Chamber, many fans were caught by surprise when MVP challenged Brock Lesnar on Omos’ behalf.
Surprise gave way to paranoia amid the permanent persecution complex that exists in the wrestling community as many believed this match was an indication that Vince McMahon was back pulling the strings in WWE creative.
While it has yet to be revealed just how involved Vince McMahon is, his full-time return to WWE creative feels inevitable. As is usually the case with wrestling journalism, conflicting reports emerged as to whether or not Vince McMahon had a hand in booking the Lesnar-Omos feud.
McMahon has since been reinstalled as an employee of WWE per SEC filings, and was reportedly supervising Night 1 backstage.
Brock Lesnar’s match against Omos was one of his most overlooked WrestleMania matches given the many great builds and storylines across both nights. As a show opener, with in-ring expectations low, Lesnar and Omos were set up to silence their critics by kicking off WrestleMania with an overachieving monster truck rally.
Similar to Lesnar’s show-stealing match against Goldberg at WrestleMania 33, these two super heavyweights put on a spectacle that fans will remember long after they forget about 99% of the interchangeable workrate classics that are on TV every week.
Brock Lesnar now moves forward with his contract situation in doubt. Lesnar was reportedly believed to be “finishing up” after WrestleMania, but Mike Johnson of PWInsider (h/t Bleacher Report) noted that this is not “necessarily” the case.
Lesnar’s contract talks have never produced a dull moment, with Lesnar even walking out of a Raw TV taping during WrestleMania season in 2015 due to a business dispute. It’s difficult to imagine we’ve seen the last of Brock Lesnar, who has made the most of his part-time status dating back to his return to the company in 2012.
But in an era where full-time WWE Superstars headlined an entire weekend of WrestleMania for the first time since 2011, a Lesnar WWE exit in 2023 would be quite fitting.
