Spears had largely disappeared from the music scene in the last few years while fighting a a conservatorship that left several court-appointed people, including her dad Jamie, in charge of her career and her financial and personal decisions. Her last release was in 2020, which was a re-issue of her 2016 album Glory. Spears was freed from her conservatorship—which began in 2008—last November, and she is also rumored to be working on a book about her experience. In June, Spears married her longtime boyfriend Sam Asghari, something she said she was prevented from doing when in her conservatorship.

This won’t be the first update to a John song. Last year, he released The Lockdown Sessions, featuring duets with current artists, including “Cold Heart” with Dua Lipa. It was first reported last month that Spears and John were working together.
