Born Again’ Director Hints Foggy’s Faked Death Theory May Have Legs

With the excellent finale of Daredevil: Born Again, it seemed to confirm that a long-running fan theory about Foggy Nelson faking his death wasn’t true. The idea was that similar to a comic book run, Foggy’s death may have been an illusion and he ended up being in witness protection, recovering from his injuries. There was even a reference to that storyline in the show itself, the number 468, the issue number, shown briefly in a scene.

However, that theory seemed to bend to the point of breaking when it came to the events of the finale when it was confirmed that Vanessa Fisk ordered the hit, which had to do with her control of the port, and had Bullseye make it look like a revenge slaughter.

But director Aaron Moorhead was asked the question directly in a THR interview and he…did not exactly dismiss it. Here’s what he said:

“I’ve heard this theory, you eagle-eyed geniuses. I would love to tell you, however, Marvel will snipe me if I say anything else. But what is really nice about Daredevil being a street-level superhero is that, generally, the supernatural doesn’t really interact with this universe as much, even though it is within the MCU. So that often gives much stronger consequences where punches hurt more and blood means more and getting hurt means more and dying very often does mean that you’re actually dead. But that’s all I can say.”

This confirms that yes, the easter egg was put there on purpose. And this entire answer says that this entire thing is still supposed to remain an open question. I don’t know why you wouldn’t just swat it down so fans don’t get wild expectations for season 2. Being this coy makes me suspicious. And things like the fact that Bullseye didn’t just shoot Foggy in the head or the heart instantly kill him, given his perfect aim, remain suspicious.

Then there’s good old Deborah Ann Woll, Karen, who said outright in interviews that Foggy would be back in season 2. Ignoring this entire theory you may imagine that could just be in flashback sequences (especially as Matt and Karen unravel how all this happened), but it could be more than that. Foggy has not been spotted in the (copious amount) of leaked set shots so far, but it’s possible whatever scenes he may have aren’t being filmed on the streets of New York. The idea that Karen knows Foggy is alive and is hiding it from Matt would not appear to be true, however.

No, they’re not going to throw Foggy in a Lazarus Pit or anything (he’d have to switch universes for that), but the door still feels open on this theory even if the finale did its best to dismiss it. Because the director won’t, that keeps it alive.
