Topline
At least 10 infant deaths have been linked to a pillow made by the Boppy company, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Tuesday, up from eight deaths when the federal agency initially recalled millions of infant loungers made by the company in 2021.
Key Facts
The two additional infant deaths happened shortly after the September 2021 recall of the loungers, when the CPSC said the pillows were hazardous and “infants can suffocate if they roll, move, or are placed on the lounger in a position that obstructs breathing, or roll off the lounger onto an external surface.”
One infant died from positional asphyxia in October 2021 after the child was placed on the lounger and then rolled underneath a nearby adult pillow, according to the CPSC.
The second infant died in November 2021 after the child was placed on a newborn lounger in an adult bed with a parent and soft bedding, the CPSC said, and the child was later found deceased on the lounger.
Since the initial recall, the pillows have not been available for sale, but regulators warned Tuesday that the products remain available on online marketplaces including Facebook, and urged people attempting to resell the pillow to take the advertisements down as it’s illegal to sell a CPSC recalled product.
Big Number
3.3 million. That’s how many lounge pillows were recalled in 2021 after the Boppys were linked to eight infant deaths, according to the CPSC.
Key Background
The Colorado-based company and the CPSC once again urged consumers Tuesday to stop using the Boppy Original Newborn Loungers, Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers and Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers. In September 2021, all three loungers were recalled after eight deaths were linked to the pillows. The infants—who died between December 2015 and June 2020—were found on their sides or stomachs after they were placed on the Boppys. The Boppy loungers have been sold since 2004 and up until their recall were considered by many new parents as a must-have for babies.
