The Toronto Blue Jays seemed to hit Spring Training with a markedly improved roster, ready to take another run at the World Series.
Shortly after falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in extra innings of Game 7 of the Fall Classic, the Blue Jays bolstered their team with several win-now additions, including some significant pieces for the rotation. Despite those additions, though, the team has now seized another opportunity to make their roster even better.
“Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer has agreed to return to the Toronto Blue Jays,” ESPN reported. “Scherzer, 41, will join newcomers Cody Ponce and Dylan Cease in the rotation. The Blue Jays could choose to ramp him up slowly, prompting him to join the rotation in-season.”

Though Scherzer is nearing the end of his surefire Baseball Hall of Fame career, he certainly had plenty of options this winter. As a three-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time All-Star, he has plenty of knowledge to share within any clubhouse and his 3.18 ERA in the latest American League Championship Series demonstrated that he still has something to offer contending clubs.
And while his existing relationship with the Blue Jays and their rotational depth surely had a lot to do with his decision to come back, his wife revealed that their daughter Brooke also played an influential role.
“I hope my dad is back on the team,” Scherzer’s daughter wrote in a letter shared by his wife on Instagram. “My whole family loves spending time in Toronto with our dad. We loved the aquarium, CN Tower and of course, the stadium. I am looking forward to coming back next season.”

Now the legendary pitcher has spoken out about the role that Brooke’s affection for the team played in his decision to come back on a new contract.
“That’s one of the things they do so well, is how they take care of the families,” Scherzer said of the Blue Jays during an interview with Sportsnet on Thursday. “When Brooke writes that letter in December, you just melt when you see that.”
Scherzer added that the Blue Jays organization and his teammates from last year deserve praise for the way that they treated his family. Obviously, it had a lasting impression on his daughter that has now translated into a reunion that could make a big difference come playoff time.
After a winter of significant additions, the Blue Jays seemed to cap things off by bringing back the future Hall of Famer. And now his daughter seems to be looking forward to another World Series run.
