This week, Blackpink singer Jisoo debuts on the Billboard Global 200 chart with her first solo single, “Flower,” which opens at No. 2. While the tune didn’t quite make it to the summit, her placement is still noteworthy, as she joins a small club of female South Korean musicians who have entered the top 10 on the chart…and they’re all very familiar to her.
Jisoo is just the third solo female South Korean musician to enter the top 10 on the Billboard Global 200 chart, joining her Blackpink bandmates Rosé and Lisa in the feat. It’s impressive that so few artists who fit that description have risen into the highest tier on that worldwide tally–and even more shocking that no one who isn’t in Blackpink has managed to do so yet.
Rosé made her name as a member of Blackpink, but proved she was a powerhouse on her own in early 2021 with her debut solo single, “On the Ground,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart. It remains the only track by a South Korean solo artist to top the list.
Fellow Blackpink artist Lisa followed with her first solo single “Lalisa,” which peaked at No. 2. Her follow-up focus track “Money” eventually peaked at No. 10. She first reached the highest region on the Billboard Global 200 only six months after Rosé’s achievement, but her journey to the upper echelon with the second win took much longer.
Jennie, the fourth member of Blackpink, was actually the first of the bunch to release solo music, but it predated the Billboard Global 200 chart, so she has yet to reach the top 10 on the chart.
As a group, Blackpink has enjoyed considerable success on the Billboard Global 200 chart, with four hits placing inside the top 10. That sum includes two leaders: “Shut Down” and “Pink Venom,” which topped the chart in 2022.
The Billboard Global 200 chart is a weekly ranking of the 200 most-consumed songs in the world, taking into account sales and streams. It provides insight into what people are listening to around the globe at any given time.
