Blackpink Makes History In Australia With First No. 1 Single ‘Pink Venom’

Blackpink’s comeback is off to an incredible start, and it’s only just beginning. The South Korean girl group makes history in one of the largest music markets in the world this week with their latest release, reaching previously-unknown heights and proving that they are only becoming more and more popular with each new era.

The band’s new single “Pink Venom” becomes their first No. 1 hit in Australia, but the fact that it made its way to the top of the songs ranking in the nation is only part of the story. Fans in the nation loved the tune from the moment it dropped, and they supported it en masse. “Pink Venom” doesn’t just appear at No. 1, it debuts there. According to the ARIA charts, the track is now the first from a South Korean group to open as high as a title can climb.

“Pink Venom” marks Blackpink’s second trip to the top 10 in Australia. They previously peaked at No. 8 as featured guests on Lady Gaga’s “Sour Candy,” a promotional cut from her recent album Chromatica. As lead artists, they had previously risen as high as No. 12, a position they lifted to with their own “How You Like That,” the lead single from their previous effort The Album.

Blackpink also appears to be the first South Korean group of any kind to hit No. 1 on the Australian singles chart. Fellow global superstars BTS have come very close on a number of occasions, but have never made it all the way to the summit. The septet has sent five tracks into the competitive region, with their disco-leaning “Dynamite” standing as their best-performing release yet. That single stalled one rung shy of running the show several years back.

When expanding the search to all South Korean musicians, Blackpink joins Psy with their first leader. His boundary-pushing dance-pop tune “Gangnam Style” ruled over the Australian singles chart back in 2012, when it took over the world for a period of time.

“Pink Venom” serves as the first single from Blackpink’s forthcoming sophomore full-length, Born Pink. That set is expected to arrive on September 16. It could become the quartet’s first champion on the Australian albums list, as their 2020 offering The Album missed the throne by one space.
