Well that didn’t last two long. It appears people have binged their way through the first new season of Black Mirror in four years on Netflix, and have moved on to something else. No, it’s not the recently added eight seasons of Suits that have surpassed it, but instead, 85 South: Ghetto Legends.
What is that? It’s a one hour comedy special with DC Young Fly, Karlous Miller and Chico Bean. The 85 South Show is a podcast that has racked up 469 episodes so far, a major hit. They also have a YouTube channel with 2.4 million subscribers. This special is a sort of supersized version of their show, and has debuted in the #1 spot, an impressive feat for any comedy program. We haven’t seen that too many times.
It seems unlikely it will stay at #1 for too long, given that it’s one a single hour, not an episodic series that requires a longer commitment. It’s unclear if Black Mirror could regain the top spot, or if the list will move on.
Further down, we do indeed have Suits at #3, a big licensed deal for Netflix, which of course features a pre-duchess Meghan Markle as part of the core cast for many seasons. There were eight seasons of this show, almost all of which were 16 episodes each. So if you’re planning to binge it, you may want to carve out uh, a couple of weeks.
The final season of Never Have I Ever continues to move down the list, as expected, at #4. Our Planet is back with a new season. Another comedy special, this one for Amy Schumer, is a ways further down at #7. Arnold and FUBAR are next to each other and #8 and #9 respectively, and FUBAR has already been picked up for season 2, as Netflix starts to accelerate their pace of renewals. #10 is…Tom and Jerry Tales? That’s a thing? No, it’s not new episodes, these are from 2007. But hey, kids watch Netflix too.
I am curious to see how 85 South does after instantly hitting the top of the charts. Netflix has long been a home for black comedy, though usually it’s the controversial Dave Chapelle specials you see at the top of the list. Probably going to check out 85 South to see what it’s all about, as I hadn’t heard of it before this.
