Beyonce Just Became The Most-Awarded Grammy Winner Ever

Don’t bet against Beyonce.

The artist and tour de force, who led the nominations this year with a total of nine, just became the most-winning artist in the history of the Grammys with a total of 32 trophies. And she’s still up for a few more tonight.

Her win for the song “Cuff It,” off her hit album Renaissance, as Best R&B Song enabled her to tie the 31-win record held by conductor Georg Solti. Her win for Renaissance for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album just sealed the deal.

“I’m trying not to be too emotional and just receive this night,” the visibly emotional artist said when she took the stage. Among her thanks was a shoutout to the queer community. “Thank you to the queer community for your love and for inventing the genre,” she said. “God bless you.”

Beyonce picked up two trophies earlier in day during the non-televised portion of the awards—”Break My Soul” won best dance/electronic recording and her song “Plastic Off the Sofa” picked up best traditional R&B performance—which broke her tie with Quincy Jones, who has 28 Grammys to date.

She faced off in the Best R&B Song category against Jazmine Sullivan (“Hurt Me So Good”), Mary J. Blige (“Good Morning Gorgeous”), Muni Long (“Hrs & Hrs”) and PJ Morton (“Please Don’t Walk Away.”

Beyonce wasn’t in the house to pick up her “Cuff It” hardware. Host Trevor Noah assured the crowd she was on her way, stuck in traffic, and after she arrived he welcomed her, noting, “I was shocked to see traffic could stop you. I thought you traveled through space and time.”

Nile Rodgers, who has a writing credit and plays guitar on the disco-funk track, stepped up to recount the magic of making the song. “When I got called to play on this song it was the most organic thing that ever happened to me,” he said. “I said, ‘I want to play on that song right now.’ It was one take.”

The other Best Dance/Electronic Music Album nominees included Bonobo (Fragments), Diplo (Diplo), Odesza (The Last Goodbye), and Rüfüs Du Sol (Surrender)

The dance wins for “Break My Soul” and Renaissance dance wins are Beyonce’s first in the dance category.
