In 2023, Beyoncé broke the all-time record for the most Grammy Awards won by any musician. Some acts would be content with the title of being the winningest artists ever, but Queen Bey never ceases to amaze, and she now has at least one new song that makes her eligible to vie for more trophies at the upcoming Grammy ceremony.
Mid-May brought a surprise for fans as the superstar released a reimagined version of the song “America Has a Problem” featuring new lyrics from rapper Kendrick Lamar. The hip-hop powerhouse added a verse, lending a fresh perspective to the track. While the song was not initially released as an official single from Beyoncé’s Grammy-winning album Renaissance, its updated version now qualifies for submission at the 2024 Grammys.
Which specific category Beyoncé and her team will submit “America Has a Problem” for remains uncertain. They have the option to submit it for consideration in the prestigious Record of the Year category, and while its inclusion may not be the most probable scenario, it is not entirely out of the question, considering the high-profile nature of the remix and the talented artists involved.
Beyoncé stands a better chance of earning another Grammy nomination in a genre-specific field. However, the question remains: which category will she choose? The song could be entered for Best R&B Performance or Best Dance/Electronic Recording, both of which she has won in the past. However, it is highly likely that the track will be submitted for consideration in the newly-named Best Melodic Rap Performance category.
Beyoncé won her first Grammy in the category now known as Best Melodic Rap Performance, for “Crazy in Love” alongside her now-husband Jay-Z. At the time, it was known by its previous name, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Including her work with Destiny’s Child, she has been in contention for this prestigious award a total of eight times, including once before with Lamar on their collaboration “Freedom.”
Lamar himself has received six nominations in this category, including one from the previous year. He has emerged victorious twice in this highly competitive field.
Beyoncé and Lamar have both garnered immense love and admiration from Grammy voters over the years. The Recording Academy has continuously recognized their exceptional talent, showering them with praise and presenting them with numerous golden gramophones. The combination of their remarkable artistry might prove too tantalizing for Grammy voters to overlook. Another nomination and potentially another win could be on the horizon for these two extraordinary artists.
