Hackers Target Social Media Accs. of Crypto Moguls to Promote Scams

Nowadays, it is becoming common for hackers to take control of Twitter, Instagram, and other social media accounts of someone influential. Many influential and famous personalities have become victims of such hacks where they lose control over their social media accounts.

On June 2, 2023, TheCoinRepublic reported that the Twitter account of the OpenAI Chief Technology Officer was hacked. Other crypto community members confirmed the hack on Twitter.

Hackers also targeted the co-founder of Sandbox in the last week of May 2023. The hacked account promoted free airdrops and launched some new tokens in the market. Following the post from Arthur Madrid’s account, the Sandbox community confirmed that the account was hacked and warned the community to stay away from such posts till further notice from the team.

Earlier on April 11, 2023, news stirred the crypto community when it was discovered that hackers targeted the Instagram of the Sandbox community and tried promoting fraud. In 2022, hackers bypassed two-factor authentication (2FA) and tried to rent Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFTs from users.

Hackers target social media accounts because it is one of the easiest and most effective ways of advertising their ponzi schemes and frauds.

Over the last few days, the crypto market has seen lots of criticism because of the SEC’s action against Coinbase and other leading crypto exchanges. Popular altcoins including Solana, Cardano, and Gala and a few others fell more than 20% in the last few trading sessions after the SEC declared these securities.
