Topline
MoviePass will relaunch its beta app on or around September 5, the company announced on its website Monday, marking the highly anticipated return of the failed movie ticket subscription service.
Key Facts
Users will be able to sign up for the service’s waitlist starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday, and it will remain open for five days until Monday.
There will be three pricing tiers for the service, $10, $20 and $30, which gives users a certain number of credits to use each month, though prices will vary depending on the market.
Space on the waitlist will be limited, but those who join will receive 10 invites to dole out to friends.
Previous MoviePass users who join the waitlist will receive complimentary credits in their account.
MoviePass will be rolled out to different markets nationally in waves.
The MoviePass physical card will be back, according to Insider.
Key Background
MoviePass gained widespread popularity in 2017 when it offered users a $9.99 monthly fee to see one movie a day. At its height it had 3 million users, and users of the app saw 50 million movies a year. Founder Stacy Spikes was fired in 2018, as the company struggled to keep cash on hand, and in 2019 its user base plummeted. Spikes re-acquired the company last year, and in February, announced the service would be relaunching sometime this summer. At a presentation, he said the company would operate on a tiered pricing model. Movies will cost credits, and their prices will be determined by their popularity and showing times. Spikes said users will also be able to earn credits by watching ads through a “PreShow” function.
Tangent
As MoviePass struggled to keep its service alive in 2018, it’s downfall was the butt of jokes and memes mocking its once too-good-to-be-true pricing.
