Nominations for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today and the series Beef, starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong earned multiple nods. The story follows a handyman, played by Yeun, who experiences a road rage incident that leads him to pursue another driver, played by Wong. The two seem to have very different lives. Wong plays a wealthy businesswoman living a seemingly ideal existence. Yeun plays a struggling contractor with plenty of debt. Yet these characters share a simmering rage that erupts in a series of escalating incidents.
The series, created by Lee Sung-jin, is up for Best Limited Series, competing with Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Daisy Jones & the Six, Obi Wan Kenobi and Fleishman Is in Trouble.
Yeun received an Emmy nomination for Best Actor in a Limited Series and Wong for Best Actress in a Limited Series. Joseph Lee, who plays Wong’s sculptor husband was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series, while Maria Bello, who plays Wong’s out-of-touch potential business partner, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series.
The critically acclaimed Netflix/A24 series also earned Best Casting nominations for Charlene Lee and Claire Koonce. Helen Huang was nominated for Outstanding Costume for Contemporary Costumes/Limited or Anthology Series for the episode The Birds Don’t Sing, They Screech In Pain.
Show creator Lee Sung-jin aka Sonny Lee received a nomination for directing the Beef episode Figures Of Light, while Jake Schreier was nominated for the episode The Great Fabricator. Lee made his directorial debut with the series finale, Japanese writer and director Hikari directed three episodes, while Schreier directed six. The Figures of Light episode also earned a nomination for editors Nat Fuller and Laura Zempel.
The Primetime Emmy Awards will honor the best in American prime time television programming that aired from June 1, 2022 until May 31, 2023. Nominees are chosen by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which promotes creativity, diversity, innovation and excellence through recognition, education and leadership in the advancement of the telecommunications arts and sciences.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sept. 18, 2023, although the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike may lead to a postponement.
